🧪 Vous le verrez dans nos annonces d’adoption, tous nos chats sont «testés FIV et Felv». Cela signifie que nos vétérinaires ont vérifié, par un test sanguin, s’ils sont porteurs du virus de l’immunodéficience féline (FIV) ou du virus de la leucose féline (FeLV).
➖ Lorsque le test FIV est négatif, cela veut dire que le chat n’a jamais rencontré ce virus. Il n’en est pas porteur, donc il ne pourra pas le transmettre à un autre chat et ne déclenchera pas de maladie associée au virus.
➕ Lorsque le test est positif (on écrit «FIV+»), cela veut dire que le chat a rencontré le virus.
Qu’est ce que le FIV ?
Le virus de l’immunodéficience féline est très similaire au VIH des humains, tant par son action à l’intérieur du corps (affaiblissement des défenses immunitaires) que son mode de contamination (sang, rapport sexuel, transmission intra utérine de la mère à ses petits).
Quand le chat est porteur du FIV, il est d’abord «séropositif» et contagieux, sans présenter aucun symptôme pendant une bonne partie de sa vie. Pendant cette période, le chat vit tout à fait normalement.
Puis, après une dizaine d’années en moyenne, il peut déclencher une maladie : le syndrome d’immunodéficience acquise ou «sida» du chat, qui fonctionne comme le sida humain. Le virus se multiplie et détruit les globules blancs du chat. Ses défenses immunitaires baissent et le rendent très vulnérable aux infections.
Lorsqu’elle se déclenche, la maladie est mortelle en quelques mois. Il n’existe à ce jour ni vaccin permettant de prévenir la maladie ni traitement permettant de la soigner.
Transmission
Le virus FIV est spécifique aux chats et n’est ABSOLUMENT PAS TRANSMISSIBLE à l’Homme (ni aux autres animaux, chiens ou rongeurs).
Il peut se transmettre entre chats par rapports sexuels, ou d’une chatte à ses petits, in utero ou par l’allaitement. Le virus peut passer aussi par des morsures profondes, si la salive du chat séropositif entre en contact avec le sang du chat sain.
Entre chats stérilisés vivant en maison, le risque de contamination est très réduit car il n’y a pas de rapports sexuels et peu de bagarres féroces comme il en existe chez les chats de la rue. Un chat stérilisé n’ayant pas un tempérament de bagarreur ne mordra pas un congénère, sauf si celui-ci l’attaque. Et la contamination n’est pas possible par les griffures.
Un chat FIV+ peut donc très bien vivre de longues années au milieu de chats négatifs sans leur transmettre le virus, à condition qu’aucun d’entre eux ne soit agressif.
En résumé
Un chat dit FIV+ (séropositif) héberge le virus mais celui-ci n’est pas actif, et ne le sera peut-être jamais. Un chat FIV+ est en aussi bonne santé qu’un négatif tant que la maladie ne s’est pas déclarée.
